The painting of this formation was done in the studio from sketches done during the Red Rock Arts Festival Plein Air Festival in Moab, Utah. The paint-out was located along the scenic River Road next to the Colorado River. It was very cold and I sat in the back of my 4Runner with the liftgate up to paint. After working on another painting in the morning, my hands were numb. I packed up, turned the heat on, and drove quite a length up the canyon to catch this formation in the waning light.
